Azelaic Acid
Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid compound that is derived from a type of yeast that is present on healthy skin, and is also found in wheat, rye, and barley Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid and has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which make it effective in the treatment of skin conditions like acne and rosacea. The acid can prevent future outbreaks and clean bacteria from your pores that cause acne. Azelaic acid addresses hyperpigmentation and effectively inhibits the production of keratin (a protein found in skin, nails, and hair) which prevents the buildup of dead skin cells that can trigger acne breakouts. This acid can clear blocked pores, and as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, can soothe the irritation and redness caused by blemishes or rosacea. Encouraging cell turnover, it revitalizes the skin and reduces the look of scarring. Azelaic acid is particularly beneficial for those with blemished skin and/or those with uneven tone and bumpy texture due to the ingredient’s ability to help visibly reduce the appearance of dark spots and rough texture. Those prone to redness and the discomfort of eczema can also reap the benefits of azelaic acid since it can also be used to calm sensitivity. It’s even suitable for those struggling with rosacea.
